ON ABUNDANCE

Another day with a bucket of coal
Another day where the sun just burns holes in my skin
Cause Texas in summer’s all cinder and sin
And I’m stuck with this bucket of coal
But I know there’s somebody somewhere
And he shouts and he shivers and he stares at the wind
And though the walls fight the weather the cold always wins
While I’m stuck with this bucket of coal

Another day with a wagon of stones
And my muscles are worn but my bones are all bored
Cause my castle casts shadows as long as the lord
While I drag this old wagon of stones
But I know there’s somebody somewhere
And his house is in ruins and his hair floods the floor
But still hell and high water rise up from the shore
While I drag this old wagon of stones

Another day with a field full of hay
And the horses are fat but the days are all dead
Cause the sun sets the table while the soil bakes the bread
And I’m left with this field full of hay
But I know there’s somebody somewhere
And his fields are so dusty they don’t dare to unfold
So he plows a canal and plants wires on poles
And he falls to his knees and he calls from his soul
And he prays that the world’s not just small but it’s whole
Til a ship sails from Texas with hay and with stones and with coal
